RUSSIAN DOLL Season 2 Trailer Takes a Trip Through Time

Russian Doll delivered a perfect season of television when it premiered. And it ended on such a moving, unexpected note it could have called it quits right then, ensuring its standing as one of TV’s great one-and-done shows. But now that Netflix has released the first full trailer for season two I’m glad it’s back. Because rather than take us on a journey that transcends life and death, Nadia and Alan will bring us on a trip through time. And if you thought dying over and over again was tough, that’s nothing compared to reliving the 1980s.

Sweet baby that’s a great trailer. This trippy teaser shows how season two’s supernatural aspect will differ from the first. The universe doesn’t need Natasha Lyonne‘s Nadia and Charlie Barnett’s Alan to experience personal growth for their own sakes. (Nor does it need them to die repeatedly, either.) They seemingly have to defeat time to help a family that has suffered repeatedly.

But the official season synopsis points to an existential journey even tougher than the pair’s first surreal adventure together. From Netflix:

Discovering a fate even worse than endless death, this season finds Nadia and Alan delving deeper into their pasts through an unexpected time portal located in one of Manhattan’s most notorious locations, the New York City subway. At first they experience this as an ever-expanding, era-spanning, intergenerational adventure, but they soon discover this extraordinary event might be more than they bargained for and, together, must search for a way out.

Natasha Lyonne as Nadia Vulvokov, Greta Lee as Maxine in episode 204 of Russian Doll.

The New York City subway? Is this a horror show now?

In addition to being its star, Lyonne once again serves as Russian Doll‘s showrunner and executive producer. The seven episode second season debuts at the streaming site on April 20. And if it’s as good as season one we won’t be debating if they should do a third. We’ll be demanding it.
