The world of The Gray Man is about to get a whole lot bigger. Netflix’s high budget action film from the Russo Brothers just launched, but the streaming service isn’t wasting anytime continuing the story. The film is getting both a sequel starring Ryan Gosling as well as a mysterious spinoff.
After debuting at #1 in 92 countries, Netflix is more than following through with its initial plans to turn The Gray Man into a franchise. The streaming site announced a sequel with Gosling and the Russos returning. The direct followup is already in development. The Gray Man co-writer Stephen McFeely (Avengers: Endgame, Captain America: Civil War) is penning the sequel solo this time. Joe and Anthony Russos will also produce alongside AGBO’s Mike Larocca, as well as Roth Kirschenbaum Films’ Joe Roth and Jeffrey Kirschenbaum.
“The audience reaction to The Gray Man has been nothing short of phenomenal,” said the Russos in a press release. “We are so appreciative of the enthusiasm that fans across the world have had for this film. With so many amazing characters in the movie, we had always intended for the Gray Man to be part of an expanded universe, and we are thrilled that Netflix is announcing a sequel with Ryan, as well as a second script that we’re excited to talk about soon.”
Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese (Deadpool, Zombieland) are already working on that spinoff. However, that’s almost everything we know about it. All Netflix said is the film is “set to explore a different element of The Gray Man universe.”
What might that entail? We’re only willing to wager the film will involve intrigue and action, because we hate to lose money. But fans of author Mark Greaney‘s The Gray Man book series will surely have their theories. Our guess is the grander the story the better chance it has of making to the screen in both films. Netflix only has big plans for The Gray Man.
