It’s been three years since young Billy Batson yelled out the magic words and became the hero Shazam in the film of the same name. Director David F. Sandberg combined the tone of the classic film Big with the DC Universe, and the result was one of the most charming superhero movies to date. Now, we’re finally getting a sequel, as Shazam! Fury of the Gods hits theaters this December. And the director and cast were on hand at SDCC’s Hall H to premiere Fury of the Gods’ first full trailer, which you can watch right here:
Most of the first film’s cast and crew are back. Not only Zachary Levi as “the World’s Mightiest Mortal,” but also his alter ego Billy Batson (Asher Angel). And the rest of his family is back too, including Jack Dylan Grazer (Freddy Freeman), Meagan Good (Hero Darla), Faithe Herman (Darla Dudley), and Adam Brody (Hero Freddy). Also on hand are Grace Fulton and Michelle Borth as Mary Bromfield; Ian Chen and Ross Butler as Eugene Choi; and Jovan Armand and D.J. Cotrona as Pedro Peña. Marta Milans will return as Rosa Vasquez, along with Cooper Andrews as Victor Vasquez, the kid’s foster parents.
And then, there’s the trio of villains for Fury of the Gods. Joining the cast as the lead villain is none other than acting royalty Helen Mirren, playing Hespera. Additionally, Lucy Liu arrives as the goddess Kalypso, one of the daughters of Atlas, and Rachel Zegler as a third, still unnamed goddess. That’s three goddesses vs. six heroes. We don’t care what the math says, our odds are on the goddesses if Helen Mirren is one of them.
Fury of the Gods is leaning heavily into the mythological aspects of the Shazam! story. After all, our lead hero gets his powers from several mythological figures, like Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury. It was only a matter of time before those Gods and heroes got involved themselves. Since both Shazam and Wonder Woman get their powers from Zeus, doesn’t that mean these two should have a meet up by now? Everyone seems to want Shazam to meet Superman (which he kind of already did). But he had way more to talk about with Wonder Woman if you ask us. We’re also interested to learn more about the dragon we saw in Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ trailer.
Despite all this heroism, Shazam! Fury of the Gods doesn’t forget its roots. As Zachary Levi shared at Comic-Con, “We’re all just trying to figure it out.” and “We’re superheroes, but we’re human beings.” And isn’t that the crux of a good, compelling story?
Shazam! Fury of the Gods is currently scheduled for December 21, 2022.
