Julia Louis-Dreyfus Encounters a Strange Bird of Death in TUESDAY’s Moving First Trailer

Discovering a strange, speaking bird with a weirdly deep voice that can also dramatically change the size of its body in an instant in your home sounds like a great premise for a movie. It works as either a comedy or a horror movie. Only, the first trailer for Tuesday starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus is neither. The first-look at the film promises a moving and heartfelt drama about love and loss. That unusual yet gentle harbinger arrives to prepare a mother for the impending death of her daughter.

This strange, emotional trailer for Tuesday might revolve around a talking bird, but the heart of this story is all-too human. It introduces Louis-Dreyfus’ single mother (Zora) and her ailing child (Tuesday). Only, this is the end of their time together. That bird arrives to announce Tuesday’s daughter will soon die. And that fowl with an unimaginable message is exactly what it seems. In addition to the trailer, here’s Tuesday‘s official synopsis from A24, which lays out exactly what the bird is:

A mother and her teenage daughter must confront Death when it arrives in the form of an astonishing talking bird. From debut filmmaker Daina O. Pusić, Tuesday is a heart-rending fairy tale about the echoes of loss and finding resilience in the unexpected.

Pusić also wrote the script for the movie, which is her feature film debut. In addition to Louis-Dreyfus, Tuesday stars Lola Petticrew (Bloodlands) and Leah Harvey (Foundations). And Arinzé Kene (The Pass) provides the voice of Death.

If, like us, watching this sad-but-beautiful Tuesday trailer ruined your day, we’re sorry. We’re also sorry for what the whole movie is likely to do to you. At least you have time to emotionally prepare for it. A24 has yet to list an official release date. For now, all we know is that Tuesday is “coming this summer.” Hopefully, in the meantime, no strange birds also show up at your home. Not unless they come to film a comedy.
