It’s time to say Sul Sul and O Vwa Vwaf Sna to a new movie adaptation of a beloved game. But this one might be just a little different than the recent gaming adaptations we’ve been seeing. Yes, Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap company will be producing a new The Sims movie. And if Barbie is any indication, this upcoming The Sims movie is going to be truly weird, filled with existential dread, and a lot of fun. Honestly, we feel really good about it. Although The Sims is very much a game that lives in the eye of the beholder, it also has a few touchpoints that any player will recognize and a few core throughlines that can easily take it into the comedic and yet absurd/horrific space.
Now that we’re thinking about it one The Sims movie isn’t nearly enough. Although one The Sims movie from Margot Robbie might go pretty far. Which direction will the story go? Will the movie feature a set of Sims suddenly realizing all their life choices are being made for them? The horror. The Sims does get a little dark if suddenly your characters have actual consciousness as will surely happen in the movie.
The Sims movie might also see Sims getting set on fire and drowning in a pool with no ladder. (Don’t look at me like that; that’s not how I play the game, but I know it’s how you do!) But it’s not all doom and gloom. We bet there will be a fun Build Mode montage. And maybe we’ll visit Willow Creek, Forgotten Hollow, Glimmer Brook, Sulani, Chestnut Ridge, and more. Will we see a new The Sims game upgrade mid-movie, and suddenly, the visuals are entirely different? What happens when someone adds a new expansion pack? We definitely need to leave space for entering cheat codes in The Sims movie. Cha-ching. It’s a lot to think about.
One thing feels likely: that recognizable blur of nudity will emerge at some juncture, and maybe even some suspicious cover shifts. But this will probably go the way of Barbie and Ken talking about reproductive organs, to which we say, woohoo! We also feel curious to see whether The Sims movie will partially be in Simlish. And what about mods gone wrong? Eerie ghosts? And climbing the career ladder? Someone tell Margot Robbie we need an anthology of The Sims movies.
For now, we know that Margot Robbie, Josey McNamara, and Tom Ackerley’s LuckyChap will produce The Sims movie alongside Roy Lee for Vertigo Entertainment. The Hollywood Reporter shares that Loki director Kate Herron will direct the movie and co-write a script with Briony Redman.
We wonder what cinematic masterpiece the trailer for The Sims movie will reference. Regardless, jadosi!
