Netflix is also getting out of the Neil Gaiman business following sexual assault allegations against him by multiple women. Variety first reported the streaming site had canceled its adaptation of his graphic novel series The Sandman. Netflix has since confirmed the show’s upcoming second season will be its last. While season two of The Sandman will air, there will be no further continuation of the series.
Jennifer Maas’ first reported that Netflix had officially canceled The Sandman. The show’s second season will be its last. It’s the latest project based on Neil Gaiman’s work impacted or stopped as a result of the serious accusations against him. The author already stepped away from Good Omens at Prime Video. It’s now only getting a 90-minute movie to end its story rather than an entire third season. Dark Horse Comics also canceled its plans for a graphic novel adaptation of his novel Anansi Boys. Meanwhile, Disney paused (almost certainly for good) development of a The Graveyard Book movie. And a Coraline musical is no longer happening either.
But according to sources, Variety said the costly The Sandman series was likely going to be canceled after season two anyway, although the allegations against Gaiman could not have helped the series’ fate. Showrunner Allan Heinberg said as much in his official statement on the show’s end. From Netflix’s release:
The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season,” showrunner Allan Heinberg told Netflix. “We are extremely grateful to Netflix for bringing the team all back together and giving us the time and resources to make a faithful adaptation in a way that we hope will surprise and delight the comics’ loyal readers as well as fans of our show.
That’s debatable (at best). Dream arguably has a lot more than one season worth of story left. And considering the site canceled its other Gaimain-related show, The Dead Boy Detectives, The Sandman was almost certainly not getting picked up for a third season. But most series at Netflix don’t make it past two seasons, either, so this really might have been the plan all along.
But no one from the show is responsible for what The Sandman author is alleged to have done. And this statement allows the cast and crew a chance to at least claim they’re ending things on their own terms and not because of Gaiman or his actions.
