DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Reveals the Identity of Muse

Spoiler Alert

Daredevil: Born Again’s fifth episode took us temporarily out of the thick of all the mess in NYC. It was a tense yet comical romp that paired Matt Murdock with Kamala Khan’s father to survive a hostage situation. But now we are back to business in episode 6, which really focuses on Muse, a comic villain who made his MCU live-action debut in Daredevil: Born Again. And boy is this guy incredibly frightening.

We previously got a glimpse of him earlier this season when he kidnapped and started drawing blood from a random man. Well, it turns out he’s taking people to his weird lair near an abandoned train station, draining their blood, and using it to paint murals that mock and antagonize Wilson Fisk. That’s certainly one disturbing way to create art.

In this episode, Hector’s niece Angela searches for more answers about her uncle’s potential killer. She comes to Matt first, who tells her that they must let the police handle it. Angela takes matters into her own hands, finding out that there are kidnappings/bad things happening at a particular location. Muse gets his hands on her and she’s unconscious as he begins to crudely drain blood from her body. Hector’s wife soon calls Matt, upset that Angela isn’t home yet, and he fears she’s in the clutches of this mysterious killer. With some intel from Cherry, Matt Murdock decides to go and rescue Angela from Muse.

Muse’s lair is quite strange, with drawings all over the place. It’s clear he hates Fisk and is also rather anti-establishment in general, but not in a cool way. Muse and Daredevil battle it out in a pretty even matchup before Daredevil gets the upper hand. He has the choice to potentially kill Muse but he stops so he can try to save Angela’s life. Muse gets away and Daredevil is now back in effect. We don’t know who is behind Muse’s chilling mask but perhaps those answers will come to the light this season.

Angela’s involvement and saving could be Muse’s undoing. It certainly is Fisk’s motivation to start gunning for Matt Murdock when he finds out in episode six that Daredevil saved her. Fisk doesn’t want Muse, Daredevil, or anyone wearing a mask on the street, as evidenced by his newly-formed anti-vigilante task force. Thanks to Angela, the police make their way to Track 61 to go to Muse’s murder basement. They find all sorts of disturbing things, including hanging bodies drained of their blood and weird artwork. Meanwhile, Matt visits Angela and she tells him about the sketches with faces on them.

Heather’s Client Bastian Is Muse in Daredevil: Born Again

Matt suits back up as Daredevil and tip toes around the detectives, flipping through sketches. He runs his hands over one particular drawing and it disturbs him. The face feels just like his girlfriend Heather Glenn’s face. He is interrupted by Agent Powell, who is on Fisk’s task force, and knocks him out to escape. Powell tells Fisk this and it sets up an inevitable showdown. Heather is in the office with her client Bastian, the seemingly unassuming guy who asked her for help earlier in the season. Detective Angie Kim had already put together the pieces that Bastian could possibly be Muse based on his background, but Powell revealing that the facial recognition of the image was Heather pretty much confirmed it.

During a meeting, Bastian begins to use his blood to make a portrait and Heather puts 2 and 2 together pretty easily. Bastian knocks her out and when she wakes up, he is fully suited up as Muse. He’s ready to drain her body and use the blood for his next masterpiece, but Daredevil literally comes flying in through a window. They get into a major fight that eventually ends with Heather getting hold of a gun and shooting Muse to death. The task force is there and breaches the building, so Daredevil must leave a bleeding Heather on the floor and escape right after he stabilizes her. But they know that Daredevil was there.

The lie told to the public is that the anti-vigilante task force is the one who killed Muse and saved the city from a serial killer. Welp. It is kinda anticlimactic for the Muse storyline to be so short. His character barely got any development! But Daredevil: Born Again still has lots to deal with, thanks to Mayor Fisk and his task force.
