MURDERBOT Trailer Gives Us Alexander Skarsgård as a Lovable Killer Robot

Apple TV+ is unleashing another polished-looking sci-fi series with an all-star cast, with the upcoming futuristic thriller/comedy show Murderbot. Based on The Murderbot Diaries series of novels by Martha Wells, the series stars former True Blood star Alexander Skarsgård as the titular robotic killing machine. The series comes to us from Academy Award nominees Chris and Paul Weitz. The duo is perhaps best known for their work on About a Boy and Rogue One. And here’s the official synopsis for Murderbot from Apple TV+:

Murderbot is a sci-fi thriller/comedy about a self-hacking security construct who is horrified by human emotion yet drawn to its vulnerable clients. Played by Skarsgård, Murderbot must hide its free will and complete a dangerous assignment when all it really wants is to be left alone to watch futuristic soap operas and figure out its place in the universe.

We’re not sure who first coined the name “murderbot” for killer robots. But we distinctly recall the term used to describe James Spader as Ultron in Avengers: Age of Ultron. Although we definitely can think of some robots in pop culture who fit the murderbot name from well before that movie hit theaters. The book series, which contains seven novels overall, began in 2017, with the most recent book coming out in 2023. It’s unclear how many books the Apple TV+ series plans to adapt in its first season.

The first two episodes land on Friday, May 16, 2025, followed by new episodes every Friday through July 11.
