The Cast of STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS On the Upcoming Third Season

After a long two-year wait, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds finally returns for its much-anticipated third season. And this year, they have a new (old) crew member in the form of Scotty, played by Martin Quinn. Recently, Nerdist got the chance to chat with much of the main cast, who told us about returning to duty on the Enterprise for year three of their five-year mission. There are very mild spoilers for the upcoming season peppered throughout, so please be aware.

Rebecca Romijn (Una Chin Riley “Number One”)

Nerdist: Last season, Captain Pike (Anson Mount) really went to bat for Una when she had all of her troubles with the court martial, and her heritage revealed. How has the ordeal strengthened the relationship between these two in your eyes, going into the third season?

Rebecca Romijn: That has completely lightened up their relationship. It’s lightened up Una for sure. She’s no longer hiding and living a lie and. She’s much freer, and ready to take her post to the next level, and I think she’s forever indebted to Pike for going to bat for her and, so it’s just strengthened their relationship. And yeah, it’s just a freer, lighter Una in season three.

So we know what becomes of Captain Pike by the time of Star Trek: Original Series, but Una’s fate is a mystery. Do you have ideas of where you’d like Number One to end up, or are you leaving that entirely to the writers?

Romijn: I actually do know, but I can’t say.

Christina Chong (La’an Noonien Singh)

Your character La’an has kind of relaxed a lot more after the events of the last season. This year, we even get to see her dance quite a bit, which no one would have seen in her future when the show started. Was the dancing aspect something you pushed for?

Christina Chong: I had a meeting with (series producers) Henry and Akiva, and they asked me, “Was there anything you wanted to do, anything you want to try?” I said wow, I don’t know, you guys provide us with so much, so many challenges each season. I said “Maybe dancing?” I don’t know how, how are you going to put that in when we’ve already done the musical. And so they did, and I thought “Wow, OK, so I asked for it. But I asked for it in my head for what was like one dance. I know, careful what you wish for. I ended up doing like 7 dances or something. So yes, there’s a lot more dancing. It was like 75 hours of rehearsal!

Jess Bush (Christine Chapel) and Martin Quinn (Montgomery Scott)

In the first two seasons, each of your characters were getting to know each other and starting to form a family. How does the addition of Scotty into the mix this season change the dynamic?

Jess Bush: Yeah, I think Scotty’s personality, and what Martin brings to the character, is so iconic and so refreshing, and it’s such a natural friendliness and comedy that he brings to the mix, so it’s such a different flavor to what already exists within our little family. And it balances it out in such a beautiful way.

Martin Quinn: Oh, I’m going red. Thank you, though. Hey, and it’s a good gang to join, do you know what I mean? They’re amazing. It’s weird having watched the show, and then joining it.

This season, Christine has a new man in her life, Dr. Roger Korby (Cillian O’Sullivan), and it causes a lot of drama in her dynamic with Spock (Ethan Peck), to say the least. Just asking each of you as actors, are you guys “Team Spock” or “Team Roger?”

Quinn: (Roger Korby) is Irish, so maybe, maybe Scotty would want Korby.

Bush: I don’t know, maybe Spock? I just think it’s sad to see him now. But I don’t think I can say. I don’t think I can say, because it might reveal something! I know the answer, and I’m actually worrying now that I’ve revealed something, so I’m panicking now.

Celia Rose Gooding (Nyota Uhura)

Celia Rose-Gooding as Lt. Uhura in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

I know this season that Uhura gets someone new to flirt with, in the form of Erica’s brother Beto. In the original show, Uhura didn’t get much of a personal life. Did you ask for your character to finally have a life outside of the communications console?

Celia Rose Gooding: Yes and no. I have always been asking the show runners, just because of the nature of the character. She’s already been through so much. So I remember before we started season three I was asking them, “I would love some levity for the character. I would love for her to be sought after and desired, and I would just love for her to feel wanted.” And it wasn’t necessarily a romantic thing.

I wanted her to have very obvious proof that she is wanted as a part of the team, as a part of her crew. And they went above and beyond and said she will be wanted romantically by Erica’s brother. And when I first heard it, I was like, “Oh, OK, that’s a change.” But it ended up being a really, really wonderful piece of her season three storyline.

Babs Olusanmokun (Doctor M’Benga)

We know, of course, that Doctor M’Benga has a daughter, and now she’s somewhere off into the cosmos. But will we ever learn who her mother was, or what that relationship was like? Have you discussed this aspect of your character with the writers?

Babs Olusanmokun: Yeah, I think we’ll have to find out. That’s sort of, yeah…that is percolating in the air somewhere. It’s percolating in the air.

Melissa Navias (Erica Ortegas)

Melissa Navias as Lt. Erica Ortegas in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
Paramount+

The arrival of Ortegas’ brother adds a new layer to your character this season. Do you feel Erica will be less willing to take big risks knowing her little brother in board? Or do you think it doesn’t really change anything?

Melissa Navias: I think that her brother knows a side to Erica that the crew maybe doesn’t as much. Because with family you can be more open, and you know they know all your all your best parts. But also, all those parts that you’re able to show, and you can let your guard down and relax. It’s her little brother, so she’s going to be protective. So I’m excited for fans to see that side of her.

But if I may for a moment, in case anyone cares, Melissa’s always also been asking for a romantic interest for Ortegas. Whether or not anyone’s gonna see that, I just want the world to know that we are asking. We are demanding, we are trying. But the fact that she gets this awesome little brother that I could not have cast any better, is going to be a treat for fans. And to see them together, his name is Beto, it’s going to be a blast.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season three premieres on Paramount+ on July 17.
