We feel a real love for older actors who simply will not be stopped from talking about the movies they’re in… Not even if the movie happens to be as a big of a deal as a new The Lord of the Rings movie. And that’s exactly the sense we receive from Sir Ian McKellen, who won’t stop spilling the beans about the newest entry into The Lord of the Rings‘ cinematic world, The Hunt for Gollum. McKellen initially let it slip that he, himself, would likely return as Gandalf in the new Lord of the Rings movie, but now he has another casting secret to tell us. Frodo will also return alongside Gandalf in The Hunt for Gollum. We love that Frodo and Gandalf will reunite, but what does that mean for iconic Frodo actor Elijah Wood? Will Elijah Wood also return in The Hunt for Gollum? We feel like he’s much less likely to tell us, but the thought does get us excited.
Here’s what Ian McKellen had to say about Frodo and Gandalf returning in The Hunt for Gollum. “I’ll tell you two secrets about the casting: there’s a character in the movie called Frodo, and there’s another character called Gandalf. Apart from that, my lips are sealed!” Apart from that!! Oh, Ian McKellen. We feel unsure he was supposed to say that much about the new Lord of the Rings movie, but like we mentioned, he can’t be stopped. And hey, we bet this The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum Frodo and Gandalf “casting announcement” will have fans buzzing about for days. Chiefly, the question of Elijah Wood’s return to The Lord of the Rings franchise in The Hunt for Gollum will undoubtedly arise.
In truth, we hadn’t even really considered whether Elijah Wood might return to The Lord of the Rings world for another turn as Frodo Baggins in The Hunt for Gollum. But that was a bit silly of us in hindsight. Wood’s Frodo is a truly beloved fixture in the pop culture space. And the actor himself has won much affection for his wacky choice of roles in the wake of Frodo Baggins. We love him Yellowjackets, The Toxic Avenger, and more. Normally, we’d say, leave well enough alone. But The Lord of the Rings movie cast seems to have such a love for the world and one another that we’d be happy to see Elijah Wood back again as Frodo in The Hunt for Gollum. (Or equally happy for someone else to take a turn in the role.)
In addition to chatting about Frodo and Gandalf’s presence in The Hunt for Gollum, McKellen shared a tidbit about the new Lord of the Rings movie’s production schedule. He offered, “I hear there’s going to be another movie set in Middle-earth, and it’s going to start filming in May. It’s going to be directed by Gollum, and it’s all about Gollum.”
Personally, we think “Directed by Gollum and All About Gollum,” is the best tagline ever for The Hunt for Gollum.
