There’s something about basements that is inherently creepy. Oftentimes, they are a dark and dank area of the house where people store belongings. You rarely go into them and sometimes they are eerily chilly with one entry/exit. It’s pretty easy for a basement to turn into a room of horrors, which is why movies like to play on that fear. While there are many things I certainly don’t want to run across in a basement, like spiders or an undead being, I cannot think of anything scarier than Willem Dafoe living in that space. He’s a brilliant actor, but a pretty creepy dude. That’s exactly what’s happening in the trailer for The Man in My Basement, a psychological thriller with an interesting premise.
The film stars Corey Hawkins as Charles Blakey, a Black man living in New York who is in quite the unfortunate predicament. He’s not working and his house, which has generational history in his family, is on the verge of foreclosure. One day, a very weird older guy and businessman Anniston Bennet (Dafoe) pops up at his door with a strange proposition. He says if Blakey will let him stay in his basement for the summer, he will pay him enough in rent to clear up his debt.
Now listen. I totally get that he wants to save his house but, as a Black woman myself, if a random white guy pulls up with an offer like this, I’d have to decline. In fact, I’d decline this from anyone because it is very, very suspicious. Where did you come from and why are you staying in my basement if you’re so rich? But, Charles does it anyway and, as we see in The Man in My Basement trailer, things do not go well for him.
