Critical Role’s THE MIGHTY NEIN Trailer Is All Dungeon, No Dragon

Not content to only dominate Thursday evenings with the Brennan Lee Mulligan-led Campaign Four, Critical Role set their sights on Thursday mornings, giving fans their best look yet at The Mighty Nein, the animated adaptation of Campaign Two coming to Prime Video on November 19.

During the “Critical Role & Prime Video: A Decade of Adventure and The Animated World of Exandria” panel at New York Comic Con (which you could have watched for free right here on Nerdist), fans were treated to behind-the-scenes details and a trailer for The Mighty Nein, the highly anticipated follow-up to The Legend of Vox Machina.

According to a press release, The Mighty Nein “follows a group of fugitives and outcasts, bound by secrets and scars. But when a powerful arcane relic known as ‘The Beacon’ falls into dangerous hands, they must learn to work together to save the realm and stop reality itself from unraveling.” But we all know there’s more to it than that…

What Secrets Is The Mighty Nein Trailer Hiding?

Lucky for you, we rolled a nat 20 on our Perception Check, and we noticed a ton of details! The trailer opens with a shot of what appears to be the Lucid Bastion, the royal court of the powerful Kryn Dynasty, one of two major factions teetering on the brink of war in this series. However, given what we see next, this could also be The Candles, the headquarters of the Cerberus Assembly, a group of powerful mages.

We see a mysterious group of people wielding a powerful artifact known as the Luxon Beacon. These powerful 12-sided-dice-shaped relics have a deep connection to a mysterious form of magic known as dunamancy, capable of manipulating time, gravity, entropy, and reality as we know it.

The bearded madman gleefully clutching the Beacon and calling it a “weapon” is Trent Ikithon (Mark Strong), or “Mr. Icky Thong” if you ask Jester. His compatriots are either members of the Cerberus Assembly or the Volstrucker, a group of elite arcane assassins. The drow wizard on the left is most likely Essek Thelyss (Matthew Mercer), while the woman in the center appears to be Astrid Becke.

Next, we see pitched battles between the Dwendalian Empire and the Kryn Dynasty, a brutal conflict known as the War of Ash and Light. After that, we get a glimpse of Dairon (Ming Na-wen), a warrior monk of the Cobalt Soul, before meeting most of the Mighty Nein.

In a group shot, we see the moody monk Beauregard Lionett (Marisha Ray), the schemin’ seaman Fjord Stone (Travis Willingham), the troublemaking tiefling Jester Lavore (Laura Bailey), the red-eyed ringmaster Mollymauk Tealeaf (Taliesin Jaffe), the deeply depressed wizard Caleb Widogast (Liam O’Brien), and the grog-swilling goblin Nott the Brave (Sam Riegel).

As “chaos incarnate,” Jester frequently defaces any surface she comes in contact with by drawing crude graffiti. In lieu of a wiener portrait, the trailer shows that Jester drew her mugshot with the tasteful booking number of “318008.” For that Easter egg, simply enter it into a calculator and flip it upside down.

Notably missing from the lineup is the towering beefcastle herself, Yasha (Ashley Johnson), but maybe she was just in our Blindspot. (If you know, you know.) We do get some quick glimpses of the brooding barbarian later, amid a fiery background and swinging a giant sword, but it sounds like her story will be getting significantly retooled according to a recent interview in Entertainment Weekly with Johnson and executive producer/star Travis Willingham.

Some other fun details include Jester’s signature spiritual weapon, a giant pink lollipop; the Mighty Nein trudging through what looks like the Labenda Swamp; and the gang fighting the arcane assassins of the Volstrucker. There are also plenty of flashbacks to the Mighty Nein’s tortured pasts, including Caleb’s fiery fate and Fjord’s shipwreck, just to name a few. There’s also one shot of Molly, which, if it is what I think it is, I’m going to throw hands. But only time will tell, so I’ll hold my action.
