Back in March, Marvel Studios revealed a very lengthy cast list for Avengers: Doomsday. It included some 27 different actors from across the Marvel Multiverse returning. But there were a few notable exceptions, chief among them Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Stephen Strange. While some exclusions weren’t shocking, considering Doctor Strange’s last film was all about the Multiverse, his name not appearing was puzzling. However, Cumberbatch is finally coming clean about his return as the former Sorcerer Supreme. Here’s what he told Collider in a recent interview about his return to the MCU, when asked directly if he has a sense of when Strange is returning:
I have more than a sense, but I can’t share it. He’s coming. He’s coming. At some point you definitely will [see Strange again].
So, it’s now confirmed that Doctor Strange will be back for sure. It’s just a question of how and when. Given the massive box office for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, a third movie seems like a no-brainer. Especially as the last film ended on a cliffhanger, with Strange and Clea (Charlize Theron) attempting to fix Multiversal incursions. But even before that, despite his name missing from the cast list, many believe that he will indeed appear in Avengers: Doomsday in some capacity.
If we were to guess, we think Cumberbatch (and probably Charlize Theron) will have small cameo roles in Doomsday. But since Strange played such a big role in the Secret Wars comic, there’s almost no way he’s not playing a similar part in Avengers: Secret Wars. In the Jonathan Hickman comic books, in the newly created Battleworld ruled by Doctor Doom, Strange served him as sheriff. While the movie version will no doubt change many things, we have a feeling Sheriff Strange will stick. Whatever role Benedict Cumberbatch plays in the MCU going forward, at least now we know he has a part to play.
