For some reason, a character going to public domain continues to lead straight towards a low-budget horror film path. That’s why we have films about killer versions of beloved sweeties Winnie the Pooh and Bambi that exist in the world. And the Twisted Childhood Universe probably won’t slow down any time soon. But, these adorable childhood characters aren’t the only ones getting the horror treatment. Up next is BOOP, a horror film about Betty Boop. According to Deadline, the BOOP horror flick is going to the American Film Market with its dark take on the Betty Boop cartoon.
Furst Class Productions will produce this film with VMI Worldwide as its distributor, and BOOP already has a general synopsis:
A team of horror podcast investigators breaks into an abandoned theater to discover the hauntings of the starlet once known as Boop. A simple investigation turns into a horrific blood bath as they fight to escape the murderous Boop, as she is out for revenge.
That image of killer Betty Boop will likely be the most disturbing thing I will see all week. BOOP stars Devanny Pinn as Boop alongside Katisha Shaw, Spencer Breslin, Eva Hamilton, and Colton Tran. Jose Prendes and Josh Ridgway are the writers behind the Betty Boop horror film, with Jared Cohn as its director.
“Getting your classic cartoon told as a horror film is still mind-blowing, but what sets Boop apart from all the other horror IPs is her motivation,” Jessica Russo, COO of VMI, said in a statement. “Boop’s dark history is extremely grim, but this telling allows her to get her power back. A true testament to feminism led by a predominantly female team.”
Well, this is all very… interesting. BOOP does not have a release date nor a trailer yet, but we are sure it will make waves when footage drops.
