THE WAR THE BETWEEN LAND AND THE SEA Sets a Release Date

Doctor Who’s universe is setting sail towards another spinoff adventure, The War Between the Land and the Sea. The series will focus on Kate Stewart and her UNIT crew, who’ve played a key role in the last two seasons of Doctor Who, and their battle against the Sea Devils. For many newer fans, it will be their first extended encounter with this Classic era villain, and the battle promises to be full of drama, heart, and tough decisions. That is the Doctor Who way, after all. So, what can we expect from this series and when will it materialize on our screens?

Well, Russell T Davies said that The War Between the Land and the Sea will drop its first two episodes on December 7 on BBC One. The following two episodes will air on December 14 with a finale a week later for a total of five episodes.

Sadly, there’s still no Disney+ release date for this series but that’s not shocking considering that the BBC and the streamer have parted ways. It will land sometime in 2026.

And there’s one big update about the show’s villain. In an interview with RadioTimes, Davies said that the Sea Devils will no longer go by that name. “It’s racist to say Sea Devil,” Davies said. Instead, he says that this aquatic race prefers to be called “Homo Aqua.” And, don’t call them monsters either.

The War Between the Land and the Sea’s Plot

The series is starting to give us some details via an official synopsis and a trailer. Here’s what this series is about:

“When a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT steps into action as the land and sea wage war.”

And here’s a short trailer as well. It looks like we might get a human and Sea Devil romance:

“There’s a race that lives beneath the oceans—they wake up, and they see the state of the oceans, that we have put it in,” explains show creator and writer Russell T Davies. “We have wrecked the place, and it is war—war on an epic scale.”

According to Davies, this miniseries will have five parts and explore what happens on Earth when the Doctor isn’t around.

Behind the Scenes

The War Between the Land and the Sea will be written by its creator (and current Doctor Who showrunner) Russell T Davies. Pete McTighe will also join him as a writer for the Disney+ series. And, we can assume that Davies will also serve as its showrunner as well.

The War Between the Land and the Sea’s Cast

BBC Studios/Disney+

The series is led by Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Russell Tovey. Interestingly, they’ve played other characters in Doctor Who: companion Martha Jones’ sister Tish and Midshipman Alonso Frame in “Voyage of the Damned.” But in The War Between the Land and the Sea, they are both new characters. Tovey is Barclay and Mbatha is Salt.

Several Doctor Who alum are also heading to this series to reprise their UNIT roles. They include Jemma Redgrave and Alexander Devrient as Kate Stewart and her co-worker and, um, “friend” Colonel Christofer Ibrahim, respectively. Ruth Madeley is back as UNIT’s Scientific Advisor Shirley Anne Bingham and Colin McFarlane will reprise his role as General Austin Pierce from Torchwood: Children of Earth.

The War Between the Land and the Sea’s Release Date

The series is set to release the first two of five episodes in the UK on December 7 and come to Disney+ sometime in 2026. It will wrap up the short-lived partnership between the streaming service and the BBC for Doctor Who content.
