Did Eleven Really Die on Stranger Things’ Series Finale?
The question that everyone is likely asking after Stranger Things‘ series finale is: Did Eleven die on Stranger Things 5‘s final episode? The question of Eleven’s death has been lurking in the air all season, ever since her sister Kali/Eight came into the picture and wanted for her sister to swear she’d let herself get destroyed with the Upside Down. Although Mike Wheeler and Hopper try to make Eleven promise to stay with them, noting that they would fix everything in time, Eleven does not give a clear answer about whether or not she intends to die until she makes her decision about whether to sacrifice herself.
Why Would Eleven Decide to go to Her Death on Stranger Things?
But why would Eleven decide to die on Stranger Things‘ finale? Well, her psychic sister, Kali/Eight, was kidnapped by the U.S. military and a scientist called Dr. Kay. While captive, Kali/Eight learned that Dr. Kay wanted to restart Dr. Brenner’s program to create kids with psychic powers, who, among other things, could create portals to other dimensions. Dr. Kay wanted to harness that power for the military. But Kali/Eight’s blood wasn’t strong enough to create new children, only Eleven’s blood mirrored that of Henry/Vecna’s blood and could be used. Kali/Eight reasoned that as long as Eleven was alive, someone would try to harness the powers of the Upside Down, the Abyss, and other powers unknown for their own gains. And all the work the team would do ending everything would be for nothing. And so, Kali/Eight wanted Eleven to stay in the Upside Down with her and get blown up.
How Did Eleven Die in Stranger Things‘ Finale?
Eleven seemed to oscillate on whether she thought death was a good answer to the problem at hand in Stranger Things‘ finale. At times, she seemed to believe that she could have a happy future with Mike Wheeler and Hopper. At others, she seemed resigned to her fate. Ultimately, though, she stressed that now she had the power to choose for herself and that those who loved her needed to respect that.
After the Party finally defeats Vecna on Stranger Things‘ finale, they trigger the Upside Down explosives and then head out through the portal. But the military is waiting for them in the real world. Their appearance seems to cement something for Eleven. She heads back to the Upside Down and watches as she explodes alongside the wormhole.
Could Eleven Still Be Alive After Stranger Things’ Series Finale?
At that moment, it felt like Eleven really died in the Upside Down explosion on Stranger Things‘ series finale. And all her friends thought so, too, everyone from Mike to Dustin to Max to Hopper mourned Eleven. But in the very last scene of Stranger Things‘ series finale, Mike Wheeler brings up an alternate explanation of Eleven’s death. In short, he claims that she and Kali conspired for Eleven to fake her own death and disappear. His evidence for this is that Eleven was able to bring him into her mind using her powers, even though the sonic canon/military kryptonite was on in full force, jamming her abilities. Mike reasons that Eleven escaped alive and was somewhere out there, finally living a free life. Stranger Things‘ series finale implies that it could be true that Eleven faked her death and is alive, but we’ll never know for sure.
What matters, for Mike and co. and for us, is whether they choose to believe it.
One Way or Another, Eleven Is NOT Coming Back to the Rest of Her Friends, Say Duffer Brothers
Regardless of whether Eleven is truly alive or dead on Stranger Things, she has officially left her friends behind after the series finale. The story that Eleven shared with them is over, and they have to move on.
The Duffer Brothers explain, “There was never a version of the story where Eleven was hanging out with the gang at the end. For us and our writers, we didn’t want to take her powers away. She represents magic in a lot of ways and the magic of childhood. For our characters to move on and for the story of Hawkins and the Upside Down to come to a close, Eleven had to go away. We thought it would be beautiful if our characters continued to believe in that happier ending, even if we didn’t give them a clear answer to whether that’s true or not. The fact that they’re believing in it, we just thought it was such a better way to end the story and a better way to represent the closure of this journey and their journey from children to adults.”
They additionally add, “And the reality is, if Eleven is out there, the most that they could hope for is a belief that it’s true because they can’t be in contact with her. Everything falls apart if that were the case. So if that’s the narrative, this is really the best way to keep her alive. And it’s about Mike and everyone finding a way to move past what’s happened.”
It sounds like whether Eleven is alive or dead after Stranger Things‘ series finale is an answer that will forever be left up to what you believe. And, in a way, that’s beautiful. Perhaps one day, Mike Wheeler’s abandoned walkie-talkie will buzz to life with just the right amount of static.
