When it comes to naming classic horror films of the 1970s and 1980s, there are many that fans agree on. We all know that Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween, and Friday the 13th are seminal movies that changed the genre forever. But there are a few films from that era that are more well known for their controversy versus critical acclaim. One of them is Faces of Death (1978). Its inclusion of video footage of actual deaths and overall gruesome nature led to critical panning and some countries banning it. Still, Faces of Death had a cult following among a subset of horror fans, and apparently Shudder and IFC are trying to remake this film for a new generation. We cannot post the age-restricted teaser in this post, but you can check it out here.
As reported by Variety, this Faces of Death remake film produced by Legendary Pictures will hit theaters in a couple of months. It is written by Daniel Goldhaber and Isa Mazzei and directed by Goldhaber, and it will lean into today’s technology to follow a similar documentary style narrative. Stars include Barbie Ferreira, Dacre Montgomery, Jermaine Fowler, and Charlie XCX.
A press release says the new Faces of Death movie will continue “the exploration of the original film’s infamous ‘Is it real or not?’ conceit continues as a woman (Ferreira) working as a content moderator for a major video platform discovers what appears to be re-enactments of murders from the original film. In an online world where nothing can be trusted, she must determine whether the violence is fiction, or unfolding in real time.”
Well, I will say that I like a lot of this new cast. Fowler was great in The Blackening and Montgomery’s role as Billy in Stranger Things certainly showed his acting chops. And, with Charlie XCX in this film, it will surely attract people who aren’t normally into horror. We will see what the Faces of Death remake brings when it arrives on April 10.
