Aragorn to Be Recast in New LORD OF THE RINGS Movie: HUNT FOR GOLLUM

The time of Viggo Mortensen is over… the age of someone else is here. Yes, the role of Aragorn, played to perfection by Viggo Mortensen in the first The Lord of the Rings movies, will be recast in the new LOTR film, The Hunt for Gollum. Director Andy Serkis recently shared that the movie is currently casting the role, although speculation following an interview with Elijah Wood points to actor Leo Woodall possibly filling those shoes. In any case, it’s possible we might see Mortensen return as an older Aragorn in some flash forwards or some such, but by and large, Aragorn will be played by someone totally new.

Serkis shared about the Aragorn recasting, “I don’t know what’s out there at the moment, but I know there’s a lot of speculation, but let’s just say we are recasting the role and we are on the way to finding someone.” Honestly, recasting the Aragorn role in The Hunt for Gollum makes all the sense in the world. This Lord of the Rings movie turns back the clock MANY years, all the way to the time between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. At the time when Mortensen filmed his first The Lord of the Rings movie, he was around 40. He is 67 now. And Aragorn is meant to be even younger than he was initially.

The amount of CGI or worse AI that it would take to get Mortensen looking the right age for Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum just doesn’t seem worth it.

As to who will play Aragorn in the new The Hunt for Gollum movie? We don’t know yet. But Elijah Wood might have hinted that Leo Woodall would step into the boots of the Ranger. Host Josh Horowitz said the following to Wood on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, “Beyond the returning folks, it’s a tough act to follow for someone to play Aragorn. But Leo Woodall, if that’s true…” To which Wood replied, “Right, that is true. Those are tough boots [to fill], man. That is tough. I can’t imagine. But that’s gonna be great.”

Whether Wood was referring to Leo Woodall’s casting as Aragorn or the role of Aragorn being hard to play as “true,” is unclear. Woodall has said that as a child he would “pretend to be Aragorn from Lord of the Rings.” So, if he is cast, at least he clearly has great love for the role.

For now though, per Serkis, the actor who will play Aragorn in the movie is not yet official. So we’ll just have to wait and see whose head the crown lands on.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will release on December 17, 2027.
