It is time to celebrate friends! The Legend of Vox Machina season four transports us back into the world of Tal’Dorei as we wrap ourselves back up in the intricately woven tale spun by none other than Dungeon Master Matt Mercer for more adventures with our most favorite group of misfits. Roughly a year and a half since we last witnessed the escapades of this amazing party, The Legend of Vox Machina season four gives us 12 glorious episodes, with three episodes dropping per week from June 3 until June 24. We were able to check out the first five episodes of The Legend of Vox Machina season four, and we’re happy to report that this show never fails to entertain and amuse.
The third season of The Legend of Vox Machina ended with our favorite band of badasses going their separate ways after defeating the dragons known as the Chroma Conclave. Scanlan leaves the party to spend some time with his daughter Kaylie. Vex and Percy leave for Whitestone to begin their life together and settle things there. Keyleth and Vax head out so she can focus on her Aramenté, and Grog and Pike go off on their own adventure. And just as we’re about to write it off as a somewhat happy ending, we see in the final moments of the finale that there’s a weird, dark energy crackling and stirring in the ziggurat underneath Whitestone Castle. We’re left with trying to figure out just what exactly it could be and how it will shape the events to come.
The first five episodes of the fourth season give us glimpses into the fourth arc from the source material, Critical Role’s very first Dungeons & Dragons campaign, titled Vox Machina. This arc, appropriately named “The Adventures of Taryon Darrington,” begins immediately following the destruction of the Chroma Conclave and introduces us to one of Vox Machina’s more entertaining characters: Taryon Darrington. We pick things up one year after the dragons’ demise, showing us where the beloved heroes of Tal’Dorei have ended up after becoming legends and what they’ve been up to.

Setting out to take care of their own unfinished businesses, this season starts by giving us enough of a look into what life has been like for Vex’ahlia and Percy back in Whitestone, how Keyleth’s Aramenté is going, how Vax’ildan is doing, what Grog and Pike have been up to, and how life has been treating Scanlan.
The first five episodes do a fantastic job at setting spicier things up for the second half of the season and do a wonderful job at keeping the audience entertained. There are plenty of differences between what happens in the original Critical Role campaign, because it’s impossible not to have to tweak things when you’re adapting roughly 60 hours of content into a 12-episode and 6-ish hour long season.
But fret not, fans. The way things unfold in these episodes so far have me hopeful for the conclusion of this arc. Not to mention, the voice acting is as phenomenal as always, which is to be expected with such a cast. With the likes of Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Sam Riegel, Marisha Ray, Liam O’Brien, and the incredible storyteller Matt Mercer, I feel like it is absolutely impossible for this show to ever have a bad performance in it.

Compared to the first half of previous seasons, this fourth one is pretty up to par with the rest so far. In true Vox Machina style, the show introduces new characters and new dangers, and keeps the audience engaged by combining tasteful humor and a very interesting plot.
There are key developments to character arcs and character relationships, and enough differences that will keep even those who are familiar with the source material on their toes and guessing what’s coming next. With episodes dropping throughout June, we keep an eye out for a few little details from the source material that still haven’t popped up in the season so far and continue to enjoy this incredible adaptation.
The Legend of Vox Machina season four will start streaming on Prime Video on June 3.
