Stephen King has been telling us high school was hell since 1974. His debut novel, Carrie, remains one of his most upsetting for its depiction of a girl who is picked on at school and terrorized at home by her religious zealot of a mother. Her only recourse is having telekinetic powers, which let’s face it, we can’t all count on. But, perhaps it’s for this reason that Carrie White’s story continues to resonate. King adapter extraordinaire Mike Flanagan is bringing the book to TV in Prime Video’s Carrie, the first trailer for which debuted at San Diego Comic-Con 2026.
Somehow, this was Flanagan’s first time at SDCC, and he was given a warm welcome by the room. There’s a lot of what you’d expect, including blood, fire, and chaos. It does give a bold reimagining, indeed. Not only did fans in the room get to see the trailer for Carrie, they were also treated to a scene that reveals more about who this version of the character is.
In the clip, it’s Carrie’s first day at school ever. She’s way friendlier than the book/movie, it seems. She overly nice to the girls in class but they take her naïveté and instantly sneer at her for not knowing things that a typical kid her age would know. There’s one girl, Chris, who always takes things out on Carrie because of her problems at home; however, there’s no real monster in this series, according to Flanagan.
Flanagan says Carrie has been adapted officially three times, but also unofficially too as there are so many Carrie White knock offs in pop culture. So this version had to be different and filtered through a modern lens. We will see what direction it takes.
Carrie will debut on Prime Video on October 7.
