Stan Lee certainly deserved credit for the work he did at Marvel Comics, helping to create some of the most famous characters in popular culture. But far too often, the artists—who, let’s face it, did the lion’s share of the work back then—get short shrift. This has changed a bit in recent memory, with Steve Ditko’s work on both Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. Without question, however, when it comes to Marvel Comics (and DC for that matter), it’s Jack Kirby who deserves the highest praise. Those of us in the know have always bowed down to the King, but now Marvel’s Avengers Campus at Disney’s California Adventure has put it out there for all to see.
To commemorate Kirby’s birthday—August 28—the theme park unveiled a plaque dedicated to the unbelievable contribution to the world of superheroes.
For years, Kirby and other artists had to fight for the recognition they deserved when it came to Marvel Comics. While not nearly as wantonly erased as Bill Finger was on Batman books, it still took until 2014 for Marvel and Kirby’s estate to reach a settlement for credit and monetization.
But, the plaque isn’t kidding. “The characters you created populate this campus as a living tribute to you, Jack.” He began his work for Timely Comics co-creating none other than Captain America in 1940. He went on to create the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Thor, Ant-Man, Wasp, Black Panther, Silver Surfer, and the X-Men, to name but a few. Without Kirby, the Avengers wouldn’t exist. That’s just a fact.
From movies like Thor: Ragnarok to The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the MCU has embraced Kirby’s unique style and penchant for weirdness in both character and visuals. And seeing as one of Kirby’s greatest achievements, Doctor Doom, is set to take over the Marvel Cinematic Universe this winter, giving the great man his flowers now is perfect.
