Six years ago, Disney announced Thor: Ragnarok director and Academy Award winner Taika Waititi would write and direct his own Star Wars movie. While development on the film has clearly not moved at hyperspeed since then, it was moving. Earlier this year, he said his take on the galaxy far, far away would be fun with real stakes. But what really stood out was that he said the movie, which he was no longer writing himself, was “still somewhat alive.” That comment implied the project might sort of be dying. But while it’s not dead yet, he has said it is “on ice.” And there’s no indication Lucasfilm will heat it back up anytime soon.

During a press junket for his new movie Klara and the Sun, Waititi told Inverse about the current state of his long gesticulating Star Wars movie. When asked about it he said, “I hate to break this to you, but we’re going to actually put it on ice and we’re working on a different thing together.” After asking his publicist how much more he could say and being told not much, he added, “It’s very iced. I’ve got about four other movies I’m trying to do.“
Not exactly great for fans who have long looked forward to his take on Star Wars. Yet, it is not entirely hopeless. Waititi also noted that “ice ages do come to an end,” so “who knows?”

When it comes to Star Wars movies, we never know. In the last decade, Disney has announced and cancelled plenty of movies. The Mouse House has reversed course on both whole trilogies and standalone films. Those never seem to get a Palpatine resurrection. Maybe the best thing that could have happen to Waititi’s movie is that instead of being cancelled it got iced.
