It’s time to return back to Wakanda in more ways than one. Not only are we getting Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in November but incredible new comic material is on its way, too. Marvel announced that a limited series, Wakanda, is coming in October with some well-known writers and artists bringing it to life. It will derive from the recent events of John Ridley’s Black Panther where T’Challa is not welcome in his homeland anymore.
Each issue will explore what Wakanda is like without T’Challa. And the stories will focus on incredible characters like Shuri who rise to protect their people. Writer Stephanie Williams of Nubia & The Amazons fame and artist Paco Medina will bring the Shuri story to life as she reminds people exactly why she was once the Black Panther. It’s a short saga that Williams cannot wait to share with the world. “I’ve been such a huge fan of the Black Panther over the years, especially the evolution and expansion of the women of Wakanda,” Williams affirms. “It’s truly an honor to kick off the new series with the Shuri story I wrote. I hope I can add to her and Wakanda’s already impressive lore.”
Each Wakanda comic issue will have a “History of the Black Panthers” backup story. They feature writer Evan Narcisse with artwork by Natacha Bustos. According to Marvel, it will give a “definitive overview of all the Wakandans who have held the mantle of the Black Panther,” which is quite exciting. And, there will be a Killmonger issue too, although details aren’t available yet. But more of Shuri—especially with Stephanie Williams penning it—is enough to get us invested into this five-issue run. Wakanda #1 will hit stands on October 12.
