MARVEL STUDIOS Vying for Award Season Attention for DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE

Deadpool & Wolverine already dominated the box office this summer; now it’s looking to gain some wins in the award circuit. Marvel Studios is gutsy with their award campaign for the film, submitting it to multiple major award shows in many categories, according to Variety.

Among the award shows Marvel Studios is submitting to is the Golden Globes comedy categories. The third installment in the franchise will attempt to snag nominations for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. Ryan Reynolds will be positioned as the lead actor for his role as one of the titular characters, Deadpool, also known as Wade Wilson. In a surprising turn, Hugh Jackman will now be optioned as a supporting actor at all major award shows. We’re talking Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild Awards, Critics Choice, and Oscars, as confirmed by Variety. Jackman plays the other title character, Wolverine, naturally.

Historically, Superhero films do not usually get major award show recognition other than visual effects categories. However, Marvel is probably hopeful for these nominations because of its precedent. The first Deadpool earned 2017 Golden Globe nominations for Best Motion Picture and Best Actor for Reynolds’ performance as Deadpool. Multiple guilds, especially the Producers Guild of America, will likely recognize the film, as they often award films with box office success.

While Marvel Studios vies for Deadpool & Wolverine to be a contender for the award show season, there is one category they can breathe easy about. During last year’s award ceremony, the Golden Globes introduced the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category for motion pictures. The award’s nominees mark the top earners and most viewed films of the year that have grossed a minimum of $150 million. For eligibility, the U.S. domestic box office must be at least $100 million. Last year, the prize went to Barbie.

Deadpool & Wolverine releases on digital platforms on Oct. 1, and 4K Blu-ray and DVD on Oct. 22
