Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler are teaming up for a horror film that’s sure to blow viewers’ minds. Until now, Sinners was shrouded in mystery, even after its first teaser hit in 2024. It’s clearly a Southern gothic tale with some supernatural happenings (and MBJ doing double duty as twin leading characters). But was it about vampires… or something else that’s equally as sinister. The full trailer for Sinners is here and yes, it does have vampires in it. But that’s not the whole story, according to Ryan Coogler. (More on that later.)
In the Sinners trailer, we are taken into the Black American South with an ensemble of characters who all gather at a juke joint. The soul of this space is vibrant, with lots of singing and folks dancing until sweat comes out of their pores. One young man, Sammy, is an exceptionally gifted musician who fits right into the scene. Meanwhile, twins Smoke and Stack are back on the scene and trying to find some stability after being away for a while.
A voiceover queues us into the darker elements to come. It says that crafting music is a gift that can conjure spirits of the past as well as the future. That gift can bring fame and fortune but it can also pierce the veil between life and death. And, well, that sweet music soon brings trouble to their door in the form of a few very sketchy white people who don’t mean well. This is a horror story for Black people living during that time period (and today, if I’m being honest). But it is even worse because they are straight up vampires who want to be invited in. Those glowing eyes and blood-stained mouths certainly sear themselves into one’s memory. We even see a couple Black folks turn, including one of the MBJ twins. Or at least, it is something that looks like their form. Suddenly, that duality we saw of his characters on posters makes a lot of sense.
What Is Sinners About and Is It a Vampire Movie?
While most people will simply call Sinners a vampire movie considering its trailer, Ryan Coogler says it is much more. During a trailer preview event that Nerdist attended, Ryan Coogler opened up about Sinners premise. “It is kind of genre bending, it’s genre fluid,” says Coogler. “There are vampires in the film, but it is really about a lot more than just that. [Vampires are] one of many elements, I’ll say, and I think we’re going to surprise people with it.”
