We’ve been hearing rumors of a Goonies sequel for years now. It seems every few months the rumors surface, only to be quickly debunked by one or more original cast members. But, we did recently have a mini-Goonies reunion, of a sort. It just so happens to be for another movie entirely. Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan is starring in Love Hurts, a new action comedy. He just so happens to be starring in the film with another former Goonie, Sean Astin. This is their first movie together in forty years. Their reunion became even more emotional when Chunk himself, Jeff Cohen, showed up for a visit to the set. Cohen is no longer acting, but he’s Ke Huy Quan’s entertainment attorney. Luckily, cameras were there to film this lovely little “Regoonian,” which you can watch right here:
Aside from the two Goonies co-stars, Love Hurts also stars Ariana DeBose, Daniel Wu, Marshawn Lynch, Mustafa Shakir, Cam Gigandet, André Eriksen, and Lio Tiptony. Will this mini-reunion actually get the ball rolling on a real Goonies sequel this time? With director Richard Donner now gone, it often felt less and less likely. But recently, Warner Bros. revealed plans to push forward on a Goonies follow-up. Will it be a sequel, reuniting the original cast? Or is it a reboot, with a fresh batch of young kids?
If we were to guess what form it might take, it’ll probably be a “requel.” In other words, a reboot/sequel, with new kids whose parents happen to be the original Goonies. While we’d love to see the whole cast return for a follow-up of some kind (yes, looking at you Josh Brolin), we’d actually be ok if it was just the core four kids of Ke Huy Quan, Sean Astin, Jeff Cohen, and Corey Feldman. Assuming it ever happens that is. In the meantime, you can catch Sean Astin and Key Huy Quan together in theaters when Love Hurts arrives on February 7.
