In 2016 test footage for an R-rated Deadpool movie starring Ryan Reynols leaked online. Had it not made its way to the world wide web the film might have never been greenlit. A decade later the Merc with a Mouth finally admitted he was the one who did it. Reynolds released the sequence online to push 20th Century Fox to make it. Now legendary animator Genndy Tartakovsky is doing something similar. Only he’s not being discreet about it. He shared a concept reel for an adult animated action movie he’s been trying to make for six years because, inexplicably, no studio wants to make The Black Knight.
In a desperate/hopeful/exhausted attempt to gin up interest in a new original film, the creator of classics like Samurai Jack and Dexter’s Laboratory took to social media to offer fans a look at The Black Knight. So far every studio, including notably Sony who recently essentially gave away the money-printing smash K-Pop Demon Hunters, has passed. After seeing this footage it’s hard to understand why. It’s equal parts gorgeous and exciting.
It also has a very fun premise. While this sequence of a giant knight fighting a ninja hints at the story, Tartakovsky didn’t want to get into specifics since he still hopes to make it. But he did write “our Knight Armor is 20 feet high and controlled by a knight inside using ropes, pulleys, and levers. The setting is around the 14th century.”

An adult-focused animated period piece about a giant mecha knight? Made by Genndy Tartakovsky? A project he believes in so much he released a concept reel to show fans what they’re missing out on even though he knows doing so is a big risk? Yeah, we’re in.
Hopefully Tartakovsky’s very public ploy works as well as Ryan Reynolds’ secret one did.
