Spider-Man: Brand New Day is looking to be a stacked movie, with almost as many heroes in it as an Avengers film. Okay, maybe not Avengers, but we’re approaching Fantastic Four levels with this one. We’ve got Mark Ruffalo returning as Bruce Banner/the Hulk, Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/the Punisher, and Stranger Things’ Sadie Sink in a mystery role, which many fans believe is another superhero. However, it seems the one Marvel hero everyone was hoping would return actually won’t — Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil. Here’s what he had to say to the Phase Hero podcast, via Deadline:
Well, I don’t read anything, so I don’t know [what fans are saying online]. I know that they all think I’m in Spider-Man because I’m filming something in London, which I’m not. I’m not in Spider-Man…I’m just concentrating on Daredevil right now.
Daredevil and Spidey have a very long history of teaming up in the comics to defend New York City. And since the two characters already know each other in their civilian identities in the MCU, this is the team-up most fans hoped to see. Although, we suppose Matt Murdock doesn’t remember Peter Parker anymore. Not after Doctor Strange cast his spell in No Way Home, making the world forget him. So when/if they meet again, it will be as if they’re meeting for the first time.
However, this statement from Charlie Cox won’t dissuade fans from believing what they want. We like to call it “The Andrew Garfield Effect.” The former Amazing Spider-Man actor emphatically denied his involvement in Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021, and ended up being in it anyway in a major role. So no one believes MCU actors when they deny involvement anymore. We’re looking at you, Halle Berry. We’ll believe you’re not Storm in Avengers: Doomsday when the credits roll on that movie, and not a second before.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, arrives in theaters on July 31, 2026.
