If there’s one thing you can expect from every new Guillermo del Toro movie, it’s lavish, detail-filled visuals. Whether it’s a modern fable or a dour noir, Del Toro’s worlds, even without the characters, feel alive. Nowhere is this more apt than with the filmmaker’s dream project, Frankenstein. A Gothic horror, science fiction epic in every sense of the word, the film deserves an equally epic look behind the scenes. Insight Editions has that covered with the gorgeous new book, Art and Making of Frankenstein, written by Sheila O’Malley. To help bring the idea of this book to life for you, we have an exclusive look at three full pages from the beautiful tome below.
This deluxe coffee table book will feature exclusive storyboards, concept art, behind-the-scenes photography, and film stills to go along with interviews and insights from the creative teams. In our exclusive pages from the Art and Making of Frankenstein book, you can see some of the incredible concept work that went into designing Frankenstein’s creature, as well as take a closer look at some of the unbelievable costuming of the film. In this case, we get an up close and personal look at the gorgeous white gown worn by Mia Goth as Lady Elizabeth Harlander.
Costume designer Kate Hawley shares these insights in our exclusive look at the Art and Making of Frankenstein book. “The first image I did of her was when she was in the market, and she had on a little cape. I started drawing on these fractal designs until it became more mothlike. the cape then became a knitted item, and so we used fractal textures and patterns. In the marketplace scene, she moves through the crowd, and it is beetle-like. We used the beetle imagery in her bonnets as well. The inside of the bonnets represent the halo of an angel. You see it in the church as well, where the gold edge of the bonnet is almost like a halo.”
In addition to the full color images and extensive text interviews, the Art and Making of Frankenstein book also features an introduction by Oscar Isaac, who, of course, plays Victor Frankenstein. That not enough for you? How can you want more? Well, how about a foreword from the man himself, Guillermo del Toro? It couldn’t get better than that. del Toro says in our exclusive pages of Art and Making of Frankenstein, “You see the creature in the beginning as the Other, and you finish the movie as Us. It is very rare to be able to make a movie about forgiveness.” What an exceptional sentiment.
Another beautiful anecdote from our exclusive pages of the Art and Making of Frankenstein book shares, “Alejandro González Iñárritu read the screenplay and gave del Toro one comment: The ship attack and the wolf fight were the only time you see the monster’s super strength. Could he find another place to show that strength? Del Toro recalls, ‘We hung up and I realized: Let him free the ship from the ice. Let him free the ship. Instead of the doomed ending in the novel, let him be more human than human— let him get freedom for the very sailors who shot at him. In the novel, he gets lost in the ice and fog and disappears. I thought, ‘What if he faces the sun? He faces life and humbly accepts it?'” Whenever The Other becomes the most human, we know we are in for a nuanced story worth watching.
