STAR TREK: STARFLEET ACADEMY Trailer: Cadet Kisses, Stephen Colbert, & Villainous Paul Giamatti

Fall is here and that means it’s time to head back to school. But not just any school… oh no. The time has come to enroll in Starfleet Academy—and if the first trailer for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is anything to judge by, we’re in for just the kind of sexy and dramatic adventure we’d expect from any kind of boarding school, but mixed with all those traditional Star Trek hallmarks: planetary explorations, big dreams, and heaping helpfuls of heartwarming hope. Then, of course, there’s Paul Giamatti’s angry, mad villain, Nus Braka. Well, we’re ready to enlist. You can check out the first trailer for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy below.

To help us make sense of the trailer, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has also released the following synopsis:

STAR TREK: STARFLEET ACADEMY introduces viewers to a young group of cadets who come together to pursue a common dream of hope and optimism. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.

First loves indeed, things are getting very steamy in this Star Trek: Starfleet Academy trailer. But we’d expect that’s how being at Starfleet Academy might go down—it’s a high-pressure situation after all. In addition to romance, we get to quickly meet all our characters. A release shares, “STAR TREK: STARFLEET ACADEMY stars Holly Hunter as the Chancellor of Starfleet Academy, the Starfleet cadets played by Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané, Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, and Bella Shepard, plus Zoë Steiner, Tig Notaro, Robert Picardo, and guest stars Oded Fehr, Mary Wiseman, as well as recurring guest stars Gina Yashere and Paul Giamatti.”

From this trailer, it looks like Paul Giamatti is absolutely our villain, Nus Braka—stealing a mother away from her son, our main character Caleb Mir, and kicking off our Star Trek: Starfleet Academy journey. Giamatti’s Nus Braka is a half-Klingon, half-Tellarite hybrid. Fascinating.

But there’s lot of good in this Star Trek: Starfleet Academy as well if this trailer is anything to go by. It feels like Holly Hunter’s Chancellor Nahle Ake, the leader of Starfleet Academy, will step up to help fill a certain familial gap for Caleb. And then there’s the found family store definitely brewing in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy—another Star Trek special. There’s an awkward turtle, a poor little rich boy, and a Klingon cadet. (played by Karim Diané.)

Additionally, Stephen Colbert will lend his voice to the series and become Starfleet Academy’s Digital Dean of Students; he’ll be in charge of providing daily announcements to the students at the academy. Colbert shares, “I’m thrilled to join this universe that I’ve loved for so long, and unlike my on-camera castmates, I’m thrilled to join it without having to spend four hours in hair and makeup every day. I’ll see you when Starfleet Academy premieres. Until then, enjoy the Con. Live long… and do your thing.” We love to see it.

Finally, familiar Star Trek faces will be coming along for the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy ride—and we see many in this trailer. There’s Tig Notaro who reprises her role as engineer Jett Reno, Mary Wiseman as a former first officer Sylvia Tilly, and Oded Fehr, who guest stars in his Star Trek: Discovery role, as Admiral Charles Vance—the head of Starfleet Academy. Additionally, Robert Picardo is back as the holographic medic simply called “The Doctor,” first seen in Star Trek: Voyager… in 1995. Don’t make me feel old now. He looks good for his age, at any rate.
