Anne Hathaway Is a Pop Star Facing a Haunting Past in MOTHER MARY Trailer

Anne Hathaway is many things to many fans. Some people see her as Mia, the formerly awkward teen who discovered that she was Genovian royalty. Others see her as Andy, the ambitious yet fashion challenged college grad who gets more than she bargained for after landing a job under a notoriously mean editor. Now, she’s taking on a new role as a pop star set for a comeback tour who must face a haunting past involving a former friend, played by Michaela Coel. The trailer for Mother Mary is a surreal and rather sexual dive into two women with a fraught past.

What is going on here? I really do not know. But, as is customary with A24, this clip is full of striking visuals and an overall vibe. Mother Mary’s former friend Sam Anselm was once her costume designer and now she readily admits that she’s never listened to Mary’s music. Very weird. We will presumably see what broke their relationship and I believe discover that Sam isn’t even alive. Maybe she’s manifesting from Mary’s guilt over sacrificing her for fame. That wouldn’t be an unusual way to take the story. But we shall see.

Mary claims to need to see Sam about a dress for her comeback tour. But, if she’s such an icon, why go back to a friend that you left in the dust? Something about this feels very ghosty and love story-like, despite the posters for Mother Mary that accompany the trailer saying otherwise.
