Genre Scores Big With 2026 Oscar Nominations, Thanks SINNERS and FRANKENSTEIN

The 2026 Oscar nominations are in and fans of Sinners have reason to celebrate. A record-setting 16 reasons to be exact. A horror film now has the most noms ever. But it wasn’t the only welcome news for genre lovers. Plenty of nerdy favorites will also have a chance to hear their film called when host Conan O’Brien kicks off this year’s event on March 15. Because Ryan Coogler’s monsters weren’t the only ones recognized by the Academy. Below, you can find our run-down of our nerdy favs with Oscar nominations and also the full of 2026 Oscar nominations.

While Sinners’ massive 16 Oscar nominations are the standout from this year’s batch of Oscar nominees, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein also nabbed an impressive nine nods. That places it third overall on the list of most Oscar-nominated 2026 movies, right behind Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, which earned 13.

One of favorite films of the year, Bugonia, was also one of the weirdest. That didn’t stop it from grabbing four nominations at the 2026 Oscars, though. KPop Demon Hunters is also up for two categories. It’s competing against fellow box office smash Zootopia 2 for Best Animated Feature. Another batch of monsters, the prehistoric kind found in Jurassic World Rebirth, has a chance to take home this year’s Visual Effects Oscar win. It’s up against the Na’vi of Avatar: Fire and Ash, which picked up two nominations. And since we nerd out about sports movies, we’re also celebrating F1‘s four noms at the 2026 Oscars. The big-budget racing movie is even up for the big award, Best Picture. We’re also excited that Weapons, a movie we loved, got a nom for Best Supporting Actress.

Sinners won’t go 0-16 at the Oscars, so we know genre will win some gold this year. The questions we have after hearing all the nominees are how many times will Sinners get called up to the stage at the 2026 Oscars, and how many other genre films will do the same. Hopefully it’s a scary good number.

You can find the full list of nominees from all 24 categories in the 2026 Oscars below.
