The Legend of Korra: Kya and the Secret of the Sand Exclusive Cover Reveal
First up, let’s take a look at our exclusive cover reveal for the new Avatar: The Last Airbender graphic novel, The Legend of Korra: Kya and the Secret of the Sand. This new Avatar: The Last Airbender novel is written by Eisner-nominated graphic novelist Kiku Hughes (Displacement), illustrated by Alexandria Monik (The Legend of Korra: Mystery of Penquan Island), colored by Diana Sousa (Critical Role: Vox Machina Origins) and lettered by Comicraft’s Jimmy Betancourt (Ghostbusters: Dead Man’s Chest).
The above is a beautiful cover and it already has our attention. A young Kya has her waterbending skills on full display as she wander through the desert, and yes, she got those from her mother Katara. But it doesn’t look exactly like she’s in any immediate danger. Could she be trying to use them to heal instead? The dead animal skull on the cover of Kya and the Secret of the Sand does make us feel like a helping hand wouldn’t go amiss. Below, we’ll get more into what Avatar: The Last Airbender mysteries The Legend of Korra: Kya and the Secret of the Sand holds inside its pages.
The Legend of Korra: Kya and the Secret of the Sand‘s Synopsis Takes Us Back to Avatar: The Last Airbender‘s Si Wong Desert
We can’t wait for this brand-new tale about Aang and Katara’s daughter, Kya. As part of our exclusive reveal of this new Avatar: The Last Airbender graphic novel, we also have the official synopsis of The Legend of Korra: Kya and the Secret of the Sand. Here’s what Dark Horse Comics shares.
While helping Korra recover in the Southern Water Tribe, Kya shares a story from her youth of a time when she was lost and disconnected from herself, far from home in the Si Wong Desert . . .
Young and untested, Kya leaves her family to seek her purpose in the wider world. Hoping to test herself and help struggling communities, she heads to the Si Wong Desert, where scarce resources and fractured communities are making the fringes of the Earth Kingdom increasingly unstable. Kya, arriving in the community of Liyuan to teach healing and help the struggling community defend itself from bandits, finds that the wounds left from decades of conflict run deep, and may be harder to heal than she first thought.
Fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender will know that some incredibly intense and dramatic moments have taken place in Si Wong Desert and will feel excited to see it return in this new graphic novel. It’s the site of one of the series’ most epic locations, Wan Shi Tong’s Library, which plays a MAJOR role in moving the plot of Avatar: The Last Airbender forward. The desert is also where Appa gets kidnapped, leading to the saddest episode of the entire franchise, “Appa’s Lost Days.” The desert additionally returns in The Legend of Korra, and now, in the new The Legend of Korra: Kya and the Secret of the Sand graphic novel.
And it sounds like the desert will again play an important role here in Kya’s new story. And, as we noted above, healing is about to become a key theme in this tale. Avatar: The Last Airbender is known for its naunce in dealing with very real ideas, such as war, poverty, and generational trauma. And we can already see this story will continue that legacy, with the ideas of healing and purpose at its center. In our opinion, these are truly beautiful ideas to explore. Kya will likely help heal the rifts in the communities she touches, but also the wounds inside herself, which in turn, will allow her to help heal Korra so many years later. We bet this will be one touching adventure, so we’ll have our tissues ready to go, just in case. And we can’t wait to see what layers of Avatar: The Last Airbender lore The Legend of Korra: Kya and the Secret of the Sand will add to the Earth Kingdom’s world.
