THE DREADFUL Trailer Has Jon Snow and Sansa Stark as Lovers

Actors aren’t their characters. That should go without saying, but the way audiences grow attached to characters means all too often branching out of established type feels jarring to people. Game of Thrones is coming up on seven years since the final episode aired. The massively talented cast have all mostly gone on to other things. Sophie Turner is gonna be Lara Croft; Kit Harington joined the MCU (albeit briefly). So, why then, shouldn’t they get to star together again without it being weird? And yet…it’s kinda weird that in medieval thriller The Dreadful Turner and Harington play lovers.

The film from writer-director Natasha Kermani finds Turner as Anne, a poor woman in rural England whose husband is off to war and who lives with her intense mother-in-law (Marcia Gay Harden right in her sweet spot). A man from the past (Harington) arrives with news of the battle and that Anne’s husband has died. Despite their clear attraction and desire for one another, Anne is still devoted to her husband, at least through the God-fearing prophecies of her MIL.

That MIL, we quickly find out, is willing to rob and murder anyone who happens by if it means a benefit for her, and she manipulates Anne into helping. Murder, mayhem, forbidden passion, swords, armor, and west country accents? It should be exactly what Thrones fans want?

However, seeing Harington and Turner macking on each other, especially in a similar style as the famous HBO series, gives one pause. It also gave the actors pause. Turner said in press last year how much kissing Harington grossed her out. So that’s how professional they are as actors. It grossed them out and they still did it. We should give them an award. For grossest romance, I guess.

Now obviously they aren’t really related. The fact that The Dreadful is a horror movie might make it more palatable. But definitely prepare for character squick factor when the movie drops on-demand and in theaters February 20.
