Over the Garden Wall is one of Cartoon Network’s little gems that we wish we got more of. Although the miniseries ran for just ten episodes nearly 12 years ago, it remains a cult classic to this day. Its charming, spooky vibes have branded it as a comfort show and popular autumnal rewatch for fans everywhere (myself included). While you can still watch the whimsical series on Hulu, Over the Garden Wall is getting a more permanent way to watch. And well-deserved, might I add. In just about two months, the cult classic will be available on Blu-ray.
Over the Garden Wall follows half-brothers Wirt (Elijah Wood) and Greg (Collin Dean). Lost in a mysterious, enchanting forest called “The Unknown,” the pair searches for a way home. They encounter a multitude of curious characters, including an elusive woodsmen (Christopher Lloyd), a talking bluebird named Beatrice (Melanie Lynskey), and many others. Hot on their tails is the mysterious entity known as “The Beast.”
Amazon sets an April 7 release date for the series’ jump to Blu-ray. We don’t have any details about special features, but fingers crossed that the one-disc release will have some fun extras. If it’s anything like the UK-exclusive Blu-ray release of the series, fans are in for a treat. That disc included episode commentaries, a behind-the-scenes featurette, the original Tome of the Unknown short, deleted scenes, and a composer’s cut of the show.
A barebones DVD version of Over the Garden Wall was released in 2015, but what’s a couple more months if there’s a chance for special extras. Maybe that’ll even mean including the 2024 stop-motion animated short Cartoon Network released for the show’s tenth anniversary.
