There’s a good chance that if you’re reading this right now, The Simpsons has been on for as long as you’ve been alive. And the long, long-running series just hit its milestone 800th episode on Sunday, February 15. As is often the case with The Simpsons, the episode showcased many guest stars, including Kevin Bacon. In addition, several actors from the HBO Max medical drama hit, The Pitt popped in. Noah Wyle, Katherine LaNasa, and Taylor Dearden portrayed animated versions of their characters as vets, enlisted to save the life of the family dog, Santa’s Little Helper. The milestone episode actually opened with a flashback to the Simpsons getting their pet greyhound, Santa’s Little Helper. Fans might remember that the family dog first appeared in the show’s first episode, which aired way back in 1989. Showrunner Matt Selman told Entertainment Weekly, “It starts out as the actual Christmas scene where they get the dog from the first episode. And then we kind of take the scene further. We matched the animation style. I love the old animation style. I wish we could do them all like that.” The storyline then deviates from established Springfield canon. We see how Marge has to take Santa’s Little Helper to the vet E.R. after she accidentally fed him grapes. Enter the characters from The Pitt.
The episode celebrated the overall legacy of the show, and according to Selman, paid homage to many past episodes. He said, “We have those flashes of Homer as a stonecutter and then the pie man. And then he’s in different outfits from famous Homer episodes as we do crazy time jumps over both the one year and 40 years that the show has existed at the same time.” Since the characters don’t age, that means the past 37 years have all just been one very wild 365-days for the town of Springfield. Luckily, Maggie is still too young to remember any of it, thank goodness. And if she does remember, that’s years of therapy from Springfield’s own Dr. James Loren Pryor. Good luck, Maggie.
