Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 classic RoboCop proved you can’t keep a good man down. At least not when you can take his brain so you can transform him into a reanimated mechanical law enforcement officer who serves as a stand-in for the dangers of privatization and capitalism. Now he’s ready to return. Again. Prime Video has announced it’s continuing to make good on its promise to resurrect iconic Hollywood IP by resurrecting a legendary cyborg once more. RoboCop is getting his own live-action TV show. Again.
Amazon MGM Studios has announced it has officially ordered a Robocop series. It comes from Peter Ocko (Lodge 49, Pushing Daisies). He will serve as showrunner and writer. He’s also an executive producer along with Blumhouse Atomic Monster’s James Wan, Michael Clear, and Rob Hackett. The best news is that RoboCop’s original co-creator and co-writer, Ed Neumeier, is also on board as an executive producer.
“I’ve been a massive fan of Robocop forever, so getting to help bring this world to television is a dream,” said Executive Producer James Wan, in a statement. “What Paul Verhoeven created in 1987 was decades ahead of its time, and its questions about technology, identity, and who corporations really serve have only grown more urgent. With Peter’s distinctive vision and bold approach to storytelling, and alongside Ed and our partners at Amazon MGM Studios, we’re working to honor what made the original iconic and highlight its relevancy in this modern, tech-driven world, while building something unmistakably new for a global audience.”
Wan’s love for the original along with Neumeier’s involvement are not the only reasons to feel a little optimistic. The show, whose eight-episode first season will stream on Prime Video, will not reinvent the mechanical wheel. The official logline states, “In Robocop, a giant tech conglomerate convinces the city to place a powerful robot on its police force – a robot implanted with the consciousness of a beloved, fallen officer.”
Sounds like the RoboCop we know. Hopefully it also reminds us of the RoboCop we love, the original. The franchise has not exactly recaptured the success of Verheoven’s iconic sci-fi social satire. RoboCop 2, 3, and the 2014 reboot aren’t exactly masterpieces. The franchise’s two live-action shows, 1994’s RoboCop and 2001’s Prime Directive, didn’t find much success, either. The 1988 kid’s animated show obviously wasn’t trying to recapture anything. (But it did sell some cool toys.)
If Prime Video’s series doesn’t land with audiences, will that finally be the end of the legendary cyborg cop? If there’s one thing we know, it’s that you can’t keep a good RoboCop down. Not even if you keep putting him in bad reboots.
