Director Francis Lawrence, the man behind films like Constantine, I Am Legend, The Long Walk, and five different Hunger Games sequels, has signed on to direct an adaptation of the science fiction book series Red Rising. Deadline has reported that Paramount has acquired the film rights to Pierce Brown‘s New York Times bestselling series of novels. The first of which came out back in 2014. Justin Rhodes, who wrote the scripts for Terminator: Dark Fate and Prime Video’s Secret Level, has taken on scripting duties.

According to the report, the novel Red Rising tells the story of Darrow, a “Red” miner on the planet Mars. He soon discovers that Mars’ ruling Gold caste has enslaved his people. After a transformation remaking him to infiltrate Gold society, he becomes a part of a rebellion seeking to overthrow his world’s color-based hierarchy. Universal Pictures obtained the rights to Red Rising for a time to make a feature film, but it never came to fruition. Then in 2021, a version was developed as a streaming series, but that never made it beyond the development stage either. A board game did come out in 2021, however.
Nerdist’s Take: Paramount Is Hoping Red Rising Can Become a Big Screen Franchise Like The Hunger Games.
Paramount is clearly looking at this as a potential big-budget franchise. And there is plenty of existing material to adapt. Right now, the series consists of two separate trilogies. The first trilogy consists of novels Red Rising, Golden Son, and Morning Star. These came out in 2014, 2015, and 2016, respectively. The second trilogy contains Iron Gold, Dark Age, and Light Bringer, which came out in 2017, 2019, and 2023. A seventh and potentially final book in the series is in the works, with the provisional title of Red God. This new film is still in very early stages, so there’s no production start date, cast, or release date announced.
