Would you look at that—more Secret Lair drops! While it can be hard to keep up with all the new Secret Lair cards nowadays, Wizards has no shortage of concepts for different drops, and it’s always interesting to see what they come up with. This time, the drops are based off of the current Reality Fracture set, which is focused on Jace Beleren, a long-time central character in the world of Magic: the Gathering. In Reality Fracture, fragments of Jace leftover from his unmaking in the Meditation Realm create a new universe, outside of the Magic: the Gathering Multiverse we’re used to. This new Jace (known as “The Theorist”) painstakingly designs the ‘Echoverse’ to not include some of Magic‘s biggest bads, like the Phyrexians and Eldrazi. Unfortunately, the Theorist lacks some crucial personality components of Jace’s, like self-doubt, or, y’know, empathy.
怪異学校 — Strange School is based around Hexhaven, the Echoverse’s wicked reversal of Strixhaven. Strixhaven is every bit the delightful magical school you might expect in your fantasy literature-and-or card game. Hexhaven is…not. The Theorist’s reality-bending magic has turned the land surrounding Hexhaven into magic-torn wastelands for hundreds of miles. The campus itself is surreal and sentient, a nightmarish funhouse mirror in physical form. The Strange School drop shows off the Hexhaven vibes perfectly, embracing an art-style reminiscent of Junji Ito with its five mono-black cards.
While Strange School is creepy, Duality Distorted brings with it a nostalgia and warmth. At least to me! Wizards of the Coast’s idea with this drop was to have four long-time Magic: the Gathering illustrators pay homage to their well-known past illustrations by creating new art for different cards in the same style. Mark Poole’s Pyroblast, for instance, is based off of his art for Counterspell from Limited-Edition Alpha, a set which just had its 33rd birthday not long ago.
There’s never a shortage of gorgeous Secret Lair cards to go around, and creativity among its illustrators isn’t flagging anytime soon. If you’re looking to pick up either of these drops, you can find them over in the Secret Lair Chaos Vault. If you’re looking for more bang for your buck—and more of Reality Fracture—you can pick up one of the three Secret Lair ‘Bundle Bundles’ that include Strange School and Distorted Duality. The ‘Everything Edition’ will have both the new drops and the Reality Fracture Secret Lair Bundle, available for $234.99 USD.
Buy responsibly, and happy gathering!
