“Time is a flat circle.” A set of truly wise words. (Thanks, True Detective!) And more and more, our fictional tales prove these true in all the reboots and resets that we’re seeing in our fictional tales. Most recently, head of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige has indicated that the MCU will soon see a “reset” (basically a reboot), which will recast some of our favorite roles of yore, such as Iron Man/ up again for a whole new generation, or is that phase of movies, and new actors will be at their helm. We saw it coming, but it still feels strange. Here’s what Feige had to say about recasting Tony Stark, Captain America, and more and rebooting the MCU as a whole.

Wait, don’t call it a reboot. “Reboot is a scary word,” Feige said. “Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline — we’re thinking along those lines… X-Men is where that will happen next.” But it won’t stop with mutants, nope. Feige revealed that “other Marvel characters will eventually be recast, including its most iconic roles, like Tony Stark and Steve Rogers.” And even though MCU superstars Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans have made recasting Marvel’s Iron Man and Captain America a difficult feat, it’s one that happens in cinema all the time. And it’s going to happen in the MCU after Avengers: Secret Wars.
Feige offers, “Amy Pascal and David Heyman are now searching for a new James Bond. David [Corenswet], the new Superman — he was awesome. That will always be the case… I think it’s hard for anybody to do that when an actor has done such a great role. How are they going to ever replace Sean Connery [as James Bond], right?”
It’s an interesting perspective. While Feige is absolutely correct that roles like Bond and Superman have been recast throughout the ages, this will be the first time that Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, or any other MCU figures are recast. Could Iron Man and Captain America be the next James Bond-type characters as they return again and again in different forms? It’s certainly not impossible. We imagine recasting Bond the first time was also a risk. That said, the initial force of the MCU came from these original characters and their original actors. Will the characters hold enough weight under new guises to recreate the same magic? Or was it magic tied to specific actors at a particular time that really brought everything together? It’s too soon to tell.
We’re curious to see where this MCU reboot/reset/recast will take us. And hey, if nothing else, it sounds like Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman aren’t going anywhere for a long time. Feige notes, “I think there is more fun to be had with both of those characters. But we’ll see where.” Hey, we’ll need those kinds of throughlines if everything is about to change.
