After months of speculation, we finally know more about Doctor Who’s immediate future. The season two finale gave fans quite the perplexing ending with Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor regenerating into a version who looks like the Doctor’s former companion Rose Tyler. Since then, there’ve been a lot of conflicting rumors about whether the show would return to Disney+ for season three. Now, we know the truth. Doctor Who is cancelled at Disney+ and will not return for season three on that streaming service. However, there will be a 2026 Christmas special on the BBC by showrunner Russell T Davies. (Thanks to Variety for bringing this to our attention.)
Is Doctor Who Cancelled for Good or Will It Have More Seasons?
The BBC made this announcement and affirmed that Doctor Who will have more seasons on the way. “We’d like to thank Disney+ for being terrific global partners and collaborators over the past two seasons, and for the upcoming The War Between the Land and the Sea,” Lindsay Salt, director of drama at the BBC, said in a statement. “The BBC remains fully committed to Doctor Who, which continues to be one of our most loved dramas, and we are delighted that Russell T Davies has agreed to write us another spectacular Christmas special for 2026. We can assure fans, the Doctor is not going anywhere, and we will be announcing plans for the next series in due course which will ensure the TARDIS remains at the heart of the BBC.”
Who Will Play the Doctor in the 2026 Christmas Special of Doctor Who?
It seems that Billie Piper will have to return in the 2026 Doctor Who Christmas for an explanation of what’s going on. Piper portraying the Sixteenth Doctor seems like quite the stretch but it is not impossible. More than likely, we will get news about who will play the Doctor next sometime in 2026 before their official debut.
How Can You Stream Doctor Who in the US for Future Seasons?
So, that means the last bit of new Whoniverse material that we will see on Disney+ will be The War Between the Land and the Sea. It is supposed to air sometime in 2025, but there’s no official date yet, which doesn’t seem to be a good sign considering November is around the corner.
As far as future seasons of Doctor Who, you will probably have to catch them via BBC America or via the AMC+ app, which includes that channel. Right now, it is not clear if there will be other ways to access the show or not.
