Prime Video’s new Critical Role animated series, The Mighty Nein, is finally here. And this fantastical new show is everything we hoped it would be. There’s incredible magic, gorgeous settings, hilarious levity and banter, and a ton of point-perfect Easter eggs. But, of course, The Mighty Nein is a much darker Critical Role outing than The Legend of Vox Machina. And its first three episodes saw us through despair, a shipwreck, exile, illness, and, of course, an explosive (and gory) grand finale to Mollymauk Tealeaf’s circus career. Now our heroes have FINALLY all been thrown into one another’s paths, but NONE of them are happy about it. In our exclusive clip from The Mighty Nein episode four, we get to see (most) of our heroes really meet for the first time in the series—and as we’d expect from this crew, it’s funny, dark, and kind of messy. In short, we can’t wait for more. You can watch our exclusive clip from The Mighty Nein below.
Before the moment shown in our exclusive clip from The Mighty Nein, we’ve mostly seen our favorite characters interact with one another in twosomes. Of course, we were thrilled to see the first meeting between Jester and Fjord and the quick, sincere bond that formed between them. And Caleb and Nott the Brave (no comma) were pulling at our heartstrings as they made careful overtures toward a real relationship (while stealing, being clumsy, and generally chaotic on The Mighty Nein). Meanwhile, Beau was doing her best on the task assigned to her, but got got by Nott (much to her dismay.) And Mollymauk seemed to be living his best life with his friends at the circus… Until basically everyone named above ruined that for him. Oops!
But if there’s one thing about Critical Role, it’s that the franchise never shies away from digging into the fallout of disaster. And in our exclusive clip from episode four of The Mighty Nein, we see that our party has ended up together in a jail cell after the events of the first three episodes—and what follows is that trademark campaign mixture of hilarity and heartbreak.
Poor Fjord, he’s catching a lot of flak from all sides because no one believes he’s really a mighty ship captain except Jester. (Which is sad, because he’s not really that small! Very heroic looking to us.) It seems to be the one thing that Nott and Beau can agree on, but we bet they turn back to antagonizing one another before long. But things go from chaotic and absurd, we’re talking Nott’s teeth in Fjord’s arm, to wrenching and painful before we can so much as blink. Taliesin Jaffe’s tremendous voice acting quickly infuses the once-unflappably cheerful Mollymauk with bleak despair as he reminds the rest that he’s lost everything and it’s their fault.
“I lost everything tonight…My carnival, my friends, and the only ones that ever gave a sh*t about me are gone. And that’s your fault.” Mollymauk tells Caleb, Nott, Beau, Jester, and Fjord in our exclusive The Mighty Nein clip, as he stuns them into silence in a rough voice full of anger and loss. And, well, he’s not wrong.
We’d say it’s not the ideal start to the relationship between the six characters, but it IS a start. And we’re happier than we could say to finally see all of them together in one place on The Mighty Nein. Where do they go from here, though? An apology, perhaps? Or maybe just a daring escape plan that asks for forgiveness louder than words? We’ll have to wait for episode four of The Mighty Nein to know for sure. But in the meantime, we’ll be rewatching this The Mighty Nein clip over and over again. Even in such a small bite, there’s a lot to take in. Did you notice Jester’s “Boob” mugshot doodle on the wall? And Molly’s tired “please” gets us every time.
The Mighty Nein is now streaming on Prime Video. Its first three episodes are now available to watch. New episodes release on Wednesdays.
