Even three years after its release, FromSoftware’s Elden Ring remains the highwater mark for action RPGs with expansive open worlds. As with all games from director Hidetaka Miyazaki, this game had some of the deepest, darkest characters, intricate environmental storytelling, and hard as nails bosses. Like, seriously, Malenia was a nightmare and then with the DLC they upped the ante with Promised Consort Radahn. Ca-ripes. But all of this is on PlayStation 4 and 5, consoles generally quite kind to players. Imagine if a game such as Elden Ring were on older consoles, with far less forgiving controls.
This is why today we’re showcasing three very fun de-makes of Elden Ring players created back when the game first dropped. Each highlights the inherent beauty of those older consoles, in their own ways, while giving a glimpse at what might have been the hardest games ever.
First up, we have the trailer for the PS1 version of the game. User Hoolopee created this video and shows off the first PlayStation’s muddy color scheme and blocky 3D character models. They also say in the description that this game would have been on eight discs and reached up to a whopping five frames per second.
Second, we go even further back in time, to the Super Nintendo era. This video from the channel 64 Bits utilizes gorgeous 16-bit sprites. We get a top-down visual style reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. In fairness, I don’t think anything on the SNES could possibly look that good. But we get looks at several of the game’s most iconic moments, like the Radahn Festival, Malenia’s waterfowl dance, and Miriel, Pastor of Vows, aka, the big tortoise with a pope hat.
Finally, we go handheld to user shin‘s pixel-perfect, green-hued original Game Boy rendition of Elden Ring. It showcases the initial few moments of the game. The player awakens in the Castle of Anticipation, learns the roll mechanic, crosses a rope bridge, and finally faces off against the multi-limbed blob, the Grafted Scion. Definitely don’t remember Game Boy’s music sounding this good, though.
Regardless of the system, Elden Ring is still one of the best games of the decade. We’d sink even more time into it had these mods really existed. And hey, maybe they still will. Don’t forget, between Elden Ring Nightreign and the upcoming Alex Garland movie, we’re still due for adventures in the Lands Between.
